So, the world has taken a drastic turn since my last blog post, Covid-19 has really had us all at its mercy for the past 6months. Plans… cancelled, travel… cancelled and racing...cancelled. It's been tough for everyone, and has affected the entire world so complaining that I can’t race my bike seems extremely pathetic in comparison.
Since the CX season ended in January, my family and I were lucky enough to get a week of skiing in Switzerland before everything kicked off. We had some perfect conditions and it was so good to chill out after a long season. A few weeks later my A-levels got cancelled… I was gutted at first as I had put in so much time and effort but speaking now, I am so glad!! This meant that I could fully focus on being a full time cyclist. However, I got pretty ill at the start of lockdown (Covid or not I don’t know?) and ended up taking 5 weeks off the bike to recover fully. I find it so mad how I went from 100% stress level to literally having nothing to do in the space of 24 hours. Looking back everything seems like a blur and the past few months have gone so fast, I got back into training pretty quickly but it has taken some time to see my form/fitness come back. Motivation varies, some days I am super excited to get out on the bike (weather has certainly helped!!) and others I really have to force myself to get through the efforts. Like everyone I have enjoyed riding with little pressure and just going out with no Garmin, remembering why I enjoy riding so much. It was nice just to be able to take that step back and fully relax, knowing that pretty well every cyclist was in the same situation. This summer may not have been the post-a level summer I had imagined but considering the fact we are still within a global pandemic, I have managed to have a really good summer, with many sunset swims and spending time with friends before we all go our separate ways. Myself and my sister, Kara, even managed to get a small bike packing trip over on the Isle of Wight, where we bivved in fields for a few days, showered in the sea and avoided being trampled by cows… but that's for another blog post. As the winter fast approaches, the idea of a british cyclocross season becomes less and less realistic as a result of Covid restrictions. I am currently attempting to put together a race calendar, which is proving difficult with no reassurance as to whether any events will actually go ahead. It's super frustrating having no confirmed races to look forward to or train towards, but still training fully at the same time, It's as if i'm on standby ready to go into racing at a days notice. I am hoping to spend as much time out in Belgium or on the continent, and racing any event I can get to and will be going into whatever this season holds with new goals and an aim to get the most out of my gap year. Thanks for reading!! Amy :) x
